Since the first international students in the nineteenth century, IU has been a destination for thousands of international students and scholars. Each year, we attract the best and brightest from all over. IU also has a long history of students studying abroad—IU Bloomington is ranked seventh in the nation for the number of study abroad participants.
While these are great achievements, we continously strive to be a premiere global university through intentional planning.
These data represent the recent past and present of IU's global engagement. We have representation on all inhabited continents. IU alumni live in, students and scholars come from, and students travel to most countries around the world.

While we celebrate our incredible progress in the international dimension of education, we know that IU's long history of strategic thought and planning helped us get where we are today.
Continuing in that tradition, IU created its first international strategic plan and refreshed it in 2015. The plan has guided a decade of excellence in international engagement.
