Darrin was born and raised in Summitville, Indiana (Madison County). Though he had always dreamed of international travel, his first trip abroad was a solo trip to Ireland in 2003 at the age of 37. Watching an elderly gentlemen playing an old concertina while he sat in a pub drinking a pint of Guinness on the island of Inishmore (Aran Islands) was a life-changing event. The elderly man’s English was accented so strongly that even the Irish bartender barely understood him. But that didn’t matter as they both sat there enjoying his music and finding others ways to communicate with each other between songs.
From there, Darrin’s love of travel bloomed. In 2005, two years after his trip to Ireland, he moved to Ukraine to teach business English to some wonderful middle and high school students in the small village of Shyshaky (Poltavska Oblast). He served with the U.S. Peace Corps for two years, where he had the opportunity to learn Ukrainian. Darrin found living in another culture challenging and rewarding. The memories of his time in that small village are some of his best.
Darrin returned to the United States to get a Master of Science in Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education from Ball State University so that he could help others to have rewarding cross-cultural experiences. He joined the Office of International Services as an international student advisor in 2010 and has loved meeting students from all over the world.
While he loves hiking in Brown County State Park in the fall, walking on the B-Line with friends, and kayaking on Lake Monroe in the early summer mornings, he still enjoys those times that he gets to use his passport to travel abroad to meet new and interesting people.
