Terrence Mason is the academic director of the IU ASEAN Gateway. He is a professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and Dean Emeritus of the Indiana University-Bloomington School of Education. Professor Mason began his career in education as an elementary school teacher in Southern California in the 1970’s and, over the last four decades, has held numerous academic and leadership roles. For more than twenty years, Professor Mason has been involved in international curriculum work with a particular focus on education for democratic citizenship. As director of the Center for Social Studies and International Education from 2004 to 2012, he coordinated numerous projects including Civitas: An Exchange Program for Civic Educators in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malawi, and India, and led Indiana University’s participation in several USAID-funded projects including the Afghanistan Higher Education Project (2006- 2011), the Macedonia Primary Education Project (2006-2010), and the South Sudan Higher Education Initiative for Equity and Leadership Development (2013-2015). He has given lectures, workshops, and research presentations in Afghanistan, Canada, China, Dominican Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Malawi, Montenegro, Morocco, Poland, Russia, Thailand, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Sudan, and Vietnam.
In 2007, as Associate Dean of Faculties, Professor Mason coordinated a self-study of global and international activity for the university’s successful re-accreditation by the Higher Education Commission of the North Central Association. Drawing upon his extensive international experience, he co-edited Ethics and International Curriculum Work: The Challenges of Culture and Context (Mason. T.C. & Helfenbein R. J. (Eds.), Information Age Publishing, 2012). As School of Education Dean, he actively promoted partnerships with the University of Warsaw, Middle East Technical University (Turkey), Beijing Normal University, and Srinakharinwirot University (Thailand). Professor Mason’s long-standing commitment to IU’s global mission was recognized when he received the John W. Ryan Award for Distinguished Contributions to International Education and Studies in 2019.
