The “Science” in Literary Studies

Thursday, February 11, 2016

6:30 PM – 9:00 PM

-
Open book with a pair of glasses on it.

Like much of the humanities, literary studies likes to think of itself as being as rigorous as any of the natural and social sciences. But what exactly is “scientific” about this discipline? Can scholarship or criticism qualify as a science? If so, in what way? If not, what then?

Four prominent literary scholars join in a discussion:

  • Peter-André Alt, Professor of German Literature and President of Freie Universität Berlin
  • Eva Geulen, Professor of European Cultural History and the History of Knowledge at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Director of the Center for Literary and Cultural Researchy
  • Ethel Matala de Mazza, Professor of German Literature at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
  • Jutta Müller-Tamm, Professor of German Literature at Freie Universität Berlin und Director of the Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School for Literary Studies
  • Moderator: Michel Chaouli, Professor of German Literature, Indiana University

Q & A and reception to follow; event will be held in German.

Indiana University Europe Gateway at the CIEE Global Institute Gneisenaustr. 27, 10961 Berlin

Please register for the event by sending an e-mail to iueurope@iu.edu or calling us at +49 30 698078849.
