The extraction of natural resources by multinational companies often has negative consequences, especially at the local level. Researchers have begun exploring the different ways that governments, companies, and communities are addressing these effects. Mobilization of local communities and associated social movements, involvement by national and international NGOs, and the responses of governments are the focus of this fourth event of the joint speaker series of Freie Universität Berlin and Indiana University.
Jessica Steinberg (IU) and Bettina Engels (FUB) will discuss their research on this topic, with a regional focus on African extractive regions.
The Freie Universität Berlin - Indiana University joint speaker series aims at bringing together scholars from both institutions to discuss current topics of global politics, stir scientific dialogue and research initiatives and trigger public debate.
