Arnd Bauerkaemper (FU Berlin) and Gregory R. Witkowski (Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, IUPUI) convene with fellow scholars to begin a discussion about how to characterize European approaches to civic engagement and philanthropic giving. They will study dialogue surrounding donors and recipients and the language used to represent need (labor movement, human rights), will examine areas of engagement that particularly distinguish Europe from the United States (environment and education), and will examine adaptation of forms of philanthropic engagement from the United States (social investing and community foundations).
