For people with visual disabilities, the world of digital information can be difficult or nearly impossible to access, navigate and use constructively. Blind and visually impaired (BVI) often rely on commercial text-to-speech engines that provide tedious line-by-line recitations in emotionally empty automated speech. Too often the BVI user must listen to great amounts of droning and superfluous information on the way to the content they seek. As educational and professional knowledge management processes in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) become predominantly or even exclusively digital, there is an urgent need to develop technologies that facilitate seamless and intuitively responsive use of this knowledge for the BVI.
This workshop seeks to bring together educators, researchers, and industry partners devoted to innovative solutions for digital knowledge accessibility and management for the BVI. The goal is to develop future projects and collaborations with organizations in both in India and in the US.
