Universität Hamburg has designated Indiana University a strategic partner.
Since 2012, Universität Hamburg's internationalization strategy has included the development of a sustainable, strategic network of partnerships with international higher education institutions. The primary goal is to forge strategic and key research partnerships with institutions that promise excellent opportunities for cooperation in key research areas and active participation of several Hamburg faculties.
IU and Universität Hamburg (UHH) have been successfully working together since 1966. The faculty research exchange between the two universities was introduced in 1977 and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2017. Particularly strong ties exist in Law, Economics, and the Humanities, especially in Linguistics and German.
Universität Hamburg has funding available for a variety of partnership activities with IU.
Research grants of up to 2 months for UHH doctoral students whose Ph. D. projects are linked to UHH’s core research areas, areas of potential or profile initiatives. A research stay at IU is required to be eligible.

Seed funding is provided by UHH to support collaboration and strengthen ties with IU. The main goals are to initiate, establish or deepen collaboration in research and teaching with peers at IU.
*Outgoing researchers from Hamburg as well as incoming researchers from IU (through a peer in Hamburg) may apply for funding.
This one month faculty exchange program is open to all subject areas. IU provides airfare for IU participants and a housing and living stipend for incoming UHH faculty. UHH reciprocates with airfare for its faculty members and provides housing and a stipend for all IU participants.
*IU faculty apply through OVPIA in the fall, for exchanges to UHH the following academic year.
UHH gives financial and organizational support for workshops/conferences that intensify and build upon cooperation with IU. As a rule, thematic workshops/conferences build upon existing research contacts. The objective is to identify possibilities for research cooperation, to build upon research cooperation, and to integrate new scientists and scholars into cooperation. These efforts strengthen strategic partnerships.
*A UHH faculty member, working with an IU counterpart, may apply to UHH for this funding.
Funded by UHH, this program supports the organization of workshops and conferences with multiple partners to develop and establish multilateral thematic networks. IU and UHH both need to participate with a third university partner. An example of a Next Generation Partnership conference could include UHH, IU, and a university in Asia. The third partner university does not need to be a strategic partner of UHH. IU faculty might consider using IU Gateway Offices in Berlin, New Delhi, Beijing, Mexico City and Bangkok for conference events.

UHH is lending financial and organizational support for scientific events in the U.S. Events must be co-organized with the German Centres for Research and Innovation (Deutsche Wissenschafts- und Innovationshäuser, DWIH) and should include IU. The events are intended to increase the visibility of Universität Hamburg’s research and overall profile in North America and to contribute to fostering and expanding UHH’s international partner network. These events could take place at one of IU’s campuses, or for greater visibility, at IU’s Washington, DC office or at the DWIH New York office.

UHH supports international teaching and learning formats that are carried out in cooperation with IU. The goal is to build on existing academic contacts, expand educational cooperation, and involve faculty and, above all, students from all groups in the strategic collaborations. A UHH faculty member, working with an IU counterpart, may apply to UHH for this funding.
