Cathie Carrigan joins the IU Global team with nearly two decades of experience in international education, first at the IU Indianapolis Office of International Affairs and, for the past decade, at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, the first school of its kind dedicated to the study of philanthropy, or “voluntary action for the public good.” She brings deep experience with strategic planning, grant and contract management, revenue generation, and research dissemination, as well as working with international scholars and leaders across disciplines, sectors, and issue areas.
Carrigan’s work focuses on public diplomacy and international research and exchange. A leading expert on foreign gifts to U.S. universities, she is one of twelve students in the United States to receive the China-U.S. Scholars Program Fellowship, a one-time initiative designed to fill the gap after the Fulbright Program in China was canceled in 2020.
In her role with the Lilly Family School, Carrigan led the international dissemination of the Global Philanthropy Indices research in partnership with the IU Global Gateway Network team. She also coordinated innovative programming such as the Ford Foundation’s NGO Leadership Transition Fellowship Program in Africa and an Executive Certificate in International Philanthropy for Chinese philanthropists. She has developed customized training for international development agencies and has published research on topics including philanthropy and public policy, the philanthropic response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and diaspora philanthropy. A doctoral candidate in philanthropic studies, Carrigan holds a master’s degree in applied communication studies and a bachelor's degree in anthropology from Indiana University
