Founded in 1898, Peking University was originally known as the Imperial University of Peking. It was the first national university covering comprehensive disciplines in China, and has played the essential role of pioneers in the course of China’s modernization. In the 21st century, Peking University enters a new stage of development. It has made remarkable achievements in building a world-class university with first-class disciplines.
As a research-intensive university with a complete set of disciplines and strong research capabilities, Peking University consists of six faculties: Sciences, Information and Engineering, Social Sciences, Humanities, Economic and Management, and Health Science. It is a cradle of high-caliber creative talents, a platform for research and innovation, and a bridge between China and the rest of the world.
Peking University always attaches great importance to the cooperation with international partners of higher education. It has established relationships with 384 institutions from 61 countries and regions. In 2019, against the backdrop initiated by “The Fourth Industrial Revolution”, and driven by the responsibility of caring for the future and engaging cooperation, Peking University released the “Global Excellence Strategy”, defining its development concepts as “CLOUDS”, i.e. creativity, leadership, openness, uniqueness, diversity, and shaping. The core of the concepts is to enhance the ability of Peking University to be the leader of an era and to contribute to the world through its global shaping.

Research
Peking University has invested in traditional disciplines including languages and literature, history, philosophy, mathematics, chemistry and physics, as well as in emerging interdisciplinary fields such as biochemistry engineering, bioinformatics, and AI.
Fundamental sciences have been flourishing at PKU alongside the more advanced, interdisciplinary subjects. As a research university excelling in the field of fundamental scientific research, Peking University has strengthened its provision of mathematics, physics and chemistry. At the same time it has also developed new interdisciplinary frontier, for example at the Frontiers Science Center for Nano-optoelectronics and the Beijing Advanced Innovation Center of Genomics.
