Universität Hamburg (UHH) was founded in 1919 by local citizens. It is the largest institution for research and education in northern Germany offering a diverse range of degree programs and excellent research opportunities. The university boasts numerous interdisciplinary projects in a broad range of fields and an extensive partner network of leading regional, national, and international higher education and research institutions. Alongside ten universities and one university alliance, Universität Hamburg was named a University of Excellence and was deemed a "flagship university" within the Excellence Strategy of the German Federal and State Governments.

Research
Universität Hamburg is northern Germany’s largest and most diverse center of research. The university is known for its outstanding fundamental research as well as its applied research projects. Five core research areas (Climate, Earth and Environment; Photon- and Nanosciences; Manuscript Cultures; Infection Research as well as Particle, Astro- and Mathematical Physics) and five emerging fields (Health Economics; Neurosciences and Cognitive Systems; Law in Global Contexts; The Early Modern World; Grounds, Causes, Reasons) shape research at UHH.
Universität Hamburg has a strong track record of acquiring external funding in both individual and collaborative projects. In addition to four clusters of excellence through the German Excellence Strategy, UHH participates in a wide range of collaborative research centers, German Research Foundation research groups, and German Research Foundation priority programs; in a majority of cases, Universität Hamburg supplies the spokesperson.
In 2021, UHH holds 16 ERC grants as well as numerous additional projects in the Horizon 2020 program, such as Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions.
Engagement with IU
Indiana University and Universität Hamburg have been successfully working together since 1966. The faculty research exchange between IU and UHH was introduced in 1977.
In 2020, Universität Hamburg has designated Indiana University a strategic partner. Building on connections from the faculty exchange and taking advantage of new support programs through the strategic partnership, a number of new joint projects in teaching and research have been developed especially in the academic fields of linguistics, history, law, economics and education.
