Students and faculty mentors can enter and win
Students and faculty mentors pair up to explore a connection between local and international sustainability efforts that incorporate Sustainable Development Goal 9. You'll have the opportunity to share your research with a broader audience, receive feedback from the judges, and network with colleagues in this inaugural competition.

Competition details
- Open to undergraduate and graduate students.
- All submissions must identify an IU faculty mentor.
- Entries are limited to one poster per student.
- Poster proposals must be submitted by May 1, 2020 to be entered in the competition.
- Winners will be announced by May 6 (TBC)
- Clear argument and link to UN Sustainable Development Goal # 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and foster innovation
- Include a project description and/or research question, literature review, sources, methods, findings and conclusion
- International dimension
- Originality and creativity
Basic requirements
- Dimensions: 768 x 512 pixels
- Quality: 150 dpi or less
- Size: maximum file size: 2MB
- Title of project displayed prominently
- Student and faculty mentor names included in design
Content
- Background: Poster explains central problem or impetus for project’s creation. This background informs the goal/thesis/hypothesis of project.
- International focus: Make a connection between local and global efforts as well as a direct connection to SDG 9.
- Methodology: Poster leads audience through your process for solving the problem or working toward goal.
- Optional Conclusions: Findings/accomplishments/progress with respect to the goal/hypothesis of the project.
- Optional Recommendations: Critical look at the future of your work. Ambitious next steps? Who/what groups should be involved?
- Pictures and graphs are labeled properly and serve purpose in explaining content.
- References are cited within sections or at the bottom of the poster.
Visual Appearance and Creativity
- Text is easily readable.
- Poster appears to have a unifying color/stylistic theme.
- Pictures and text appear in relatively equal proportion.
- Pictures are of high resolution and do not appear pixilated.
- Graphics are used to visually display tabular material.
Conventions and Voice
- The poster has no spelling errors.
- The poster has no grammatical errors.
- The poster content is written in an academic tone.

Engaging with UN Sustainable Development Goals
In December 2018, IU became a founding member of the U.S. chapter of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN). This alliance of U.S. universities seeks to make progress toward achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This framework provides an essential perspective for inherently global issues. Studying the SDGs is part of a broader, international approach to learning. This project aligns international learning with SDGs, challenges and empowers students, and creates new skills, values and attitudes for global sustainable societies.
Disclaimer: Awards are subject to standard university procedures and applicable tax withholdings. Student awards will be posted to the recipients’ bursar accounts for spring 2020 term. Faculty mentor remuneration will be issued in May 2020 as one-time additional pay under the reason code “award.”
