On-campus employment

On-campus work for international students

There are specific guidelines for international students and limitations for on-campus employment.

Most international students have a strict 20-hour per week limit for on-campus work–even for just a small project. Students who work for more than 20 hours per week without prior authorization can face significant immigration consequence s, including the termination of a student's SEVIS record, and a possible loss of immigration status. If you have questions about opportunities students may have to work more than 20 hours per week, IU’s international student advisors should be consulted before the employment occurs.

A critical point is that “on-campus work” means employment that takes place on the premises of the campus that issues a student’s immigration document and is also paid by that campus. IU students working outside of their home campus requires specific authorization in advance.

Fall 2023

  1. Students who will continue in their current program of study in spring 2024 are eligible to work full-time on-campus from Dec. 18, 2023 until Jan. 7, 2023.
  2. The fall 2023 academic term may create some specific timing challenges for students who will complete their academic programs in this semester. Students who will finish their programs in fall 2023 will need to cease all on-campus employment (SAA, hourly, etc.) at the time of program completion.
  3. As an example, some students may finish their program requirements on November 17 with the end of the 13-week session. Those students would need to stop working on Nov. 17. (Program completion for undergraduate students, or graduate students with no thesis/dissertation requirement will be the last day of classes in the term in which the student is enrolled.)
