The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences is the premier academic organization and comprehensive research center of the People’s Republic of China in the fields of philosophy and social sciences. CASS was established in May 1977, replacing the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
It is now made up of 41 research institutes under six academic divisions: the Academic Division of Literature, the Academic Division of History, the Academy Division of Economics, the Academic Division of Social, Political Studies and Law, the Academic Division of International Studies, and the Academic Division of Marxist Studies. The University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (UCASS) was established in May 2017 on the basis of the Graduate School of CASS (GSCASS), the first graduate school in China devoted to graduate education in humanities and social sciences. UCASS has 13 schools and 39 departments.
