Founded in 1934 with the unification of several existing schools, the University of São Paulo is today one of the largest and most prestigious institutions of higher education in Latin America and Brazil’s largest public university. Four of its eleven campuses are located in the city of São Paulo, with other campuses in the cities of Bauru, Lorena, Piracicaba, Pirassununga, Ribeirão Preto, and São Carlos.
The university enrolls more than 95,000 students (as of 2020). It has 70 libraries across its campuses, five affiliated hospitals, 24 museums and galleries, two theatres, a cinema, and its own TV channel run by students.

Research
Researchers at USP are responsible for more than 20% of all scientific output in Brazil. USP has more than 1,600 research groups certified by the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) and 11 Centers for Research, Innovation, and Diffusion (CEPIDs) funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP). The research topics of the CEPIDS include: food and nutrition; glass and ceramics; functional materials; neuroscience and neurotechnology; inflammatory diseases; biodiversity and new drug discovery; toxins, immune response and cell signaling; neuromathematics; mathematical sciences applied to industry; obesity and associated diseases; cell therapy; metropolitan studies; human genome and stem cells; computational engineering; oxidizing and antioxidant processes in biomedicine; violence; and optics, biophotonics and atomic and molecular physics.
Engagement with IU
The University of São Paulo has a primary agreement with IU, initially signed in 2012.
The IU School of Education-Bloomington has a sub-agreement with USP’s School of Law, recognizing the ongoing collaboration between faculties and graduate students in the areas of education law and policy.
