During his trip to Brazil in November 2012, IU President Michael McRobbie met with Ana Maria Machado, President of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL) at the time, and they signed an agreement establishing formal ties between IU and the ABL, one of the most distinguished centers of literature and culture in Latin America. The agreement was renewed in 2017 for an additional five-year period, signed by ABL President DomÃcio Proença Filho. The agreement facilitates the mobility of IU scholars and ABL members. Researchers from IU have access to the ABL's rich archival resources in literature, history, politics and culture and may be invited to give lectures and participate in events at the ABL. ABL members that visit IU are encouraged to give public lectures, meet with students and faculty, and generally engage in the intellectual life of the university. IU hosted ABL members CÃcero Sandroni in spring 2011, João Ubaldo Ribeiro in spring 2012, and Nelson Pereira dos Santos in spring 2013. IU is the only university in the United States to have an agreement with the ABL.
