Indiana University's partnership with Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) dates back to 2007 when IU Indianapolis initiated an alliance with SYSU.
From 2014 through the start of the pandemic, the Schools of Nursing at both universities had hosted small numbers of students, led by their respective nursing faculty, for experiential learning based on observation. Since 2020, the schools have continued to collaborate remotely via virtual connections.
In 2018, IU and SYSU signed a sub-agreement that represented their shared interest in cooperating on aspects of the TianQin project to advance their mutual objectives in research and education.
In 2019, IU Indianapolis Chancellor Nasser Paydar visited SYSU and reconfirmed IU's continued interest in the partnership.
