The initial primary agreement was signed in September 2009 by then ANU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ian Chubb and IU President Michael McRobbie. Initiated in the same year, the was the first jointly established activity under the agreement. The first year focused on distance education courses in selected foreign languages (e.g. Uzbek and Pashto for ANU students, Indonesian for IU students) and exchanges of faculty, students, and staff. In subsequent years, the ANU-IU Pan-Asia Institute have held joint workshops, supported collaborative research and scholarship on the pan-Asian region, and worked on other activities of mutual interest to IU and ANU. In 2014, the on the IU Bloomington campus established faculty exchange programs with ANU in the humanities and social sciences.
