In 1946, IU President Herman B Wells was seconded to General Clay's staff for reconstruction of the German educational system. Wells worked with the original group of German students in Berlin who helped to found the Freie Universität Berlin (FUB) as a counterpoint to Humboldt University in the Russian controlled section of Berlin. The first informal exchanges of scholars began in the early 1950's, and the first agreement for exchange was signed in 1962. This has been followed by a series of exchange and partnership agreements over the years. IU and FUB continue to administer a very popular graduate student exchange program. Current president Michael McRobbie renewed the partnership in Berlin on November 5, 2015, part of a trip to inaugurate IU's Europe Gateway Office. The agreement was again renewed on November 1, 2020.
